Sponsor an Elder

Although children’s education will continue to be the focus of our sponsorship program, we’ve expanded our sponsorship to include destitute Tibetan elders.

Family ties are strong in Tibetan communities and children often take care of their elderly parents, but there are many exiled elders who have lost their families and live alone. Life can be very difficult and lonely for the elderly without children to help support them. TCEF created the “Elders Sponsorship” to address the needs of these elderly folks. Sponsoring an “elder” for $30 a month is a wonderful opportunity to bring comfort to a lonely, destitute elder. The funds are used to improve the quality of their later years and assist with such expenses as medical care, eye care, clothing, etc and perhaps will enable a spiritual pilgrimage to a holy Buddhist site.

This Summer TCEF received a special request from Gu Chu Sum to help elders in Dharamsala. Gu Chu Sum is an organization based in Dharamsala, India, that is dedicated to helping Tibetan ex-political prisoners start new lives in exile.  We’re honored to help knowing that these are people who have endured great pain and suffering for Tibet and its culture. With your support we’ll try to bring a little comfort and dignity in their lives through the elders sponsorship program.

Here are all the different ways that you can help a needy Tibetan elder in exile:

* Adopt an elder – Make this sponsorship your compassionate giving – your karma yoga. Support him/her till the end of their natural lives. Unlike the children’s sponsorship – the elders will not be able to write back to you.  Instead, they will send all the prayers of a grateful heart your way.

* Make a sponsorship commitment for three years. TCEF will work hard to find another sponsor to pass on the baton of kindness at the end of your commitment. So your good work will continue even after you have stopped sponsoring.

*Make a one time donation to benefit Tibetan elders in need. Your donation will enable us to help needy elders until we find a committed sponsor for him/her.
